18th annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival announce masters of music for 2017 Master Classes
The Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) has done it again, with an incredible calibre of international artists presenting the ever-popular 2017 Master Classes, taking place at the Cape Sun Hotel. This year, CTIJF 2017 performing artists Kamasi Washington (USA), Andra Day (USA), The Internet (USA), Rudresh Mahanthappa (USA), Taylor McFerrin & Marcus Gilmore (USA), Gretchen Parlato (USA) and supergroup Jazz Funk Soul (USA) will interact and engage with audiences at these unique, free to the public workshops, aimed at sharing knowledge and experience.
These annual Master Classes form part of organiser espAfrika’s Sustainable Training & Development programme, that aims to provide aspiring musicians with tools, skills and knowledge to assist them in realizing their dreams of success in the music industry. This platform creates a one-of-a-kind exchange between the award-winning international musicians of the CTIJF, and the future musical talents of tomorrow.
On Friday, multi-award winning reedman Kamasi Washington (USA) will share his vast expertise in jazz and music composition with young fans and jazz enthusiasts in a rare, intimate setting that’s open to questions and audience participation.
Jazz purists will enjoy the multiple award-winning alto saxophonist, Rudresh Mahanthappa who will lead attendees on a spiritual journey into the mystic on Saturday, while on an entirely different note, producer, singer-songwriter, keyboardist Taylor McFerrin (USA) along with rhythm man and highly-talented drummer Marcus Gilmore (USA) will open the pathway on Friday and share a glimpse into their worldwide fame.
The beautiful, Grammy-nominated star Andra Day (USA) will share her experience as a breakout performer on Friday and enlighten fans and interested parties of how she made her musical dreams come true.
Three of the world’s most admired fusion players: saxophonist Everette Harp, keyboardist Jeff Lorber and world-renown guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. who make up the supergroup, Jazz Funk Soul (USA) will engage with fans on Friday before they take on the Kippies main stage on Saturday.
Vocalist Gretchen Parlato (USA), is not only an incredible performer, but also an in-demand teacher and collaborator. Her Master Class on Saturday is sure to attract many rising vocalists and fans looking to find out more about her experience and success in the international music industry.
Finding their own voice and sharing the angst of love and loss is The Internet (USA), whose recent announcement of their participation at CTIJF 2017 sent Twitter into frenzy. Syd ‘tha Kid’ and crew will share how they translate this emotional rollercoaster into verses that resonate across all borders, in a special Master Class on Saturday.
